It’s been a while since I discussed IPS (In Person Sales) vs non-IPS (shoot & burn or all-inclusive). See my past blog about IPS here! Selling Product without IPS and Comparing Sales Methods.
There’s a few different ways to sell photos from sessions but here’s the two most popular!
IPS
You can sell everything a la carte (with or without a “sitting fee” for the session). This is usually referred to as In-Person Sales, where clients get to choose exactly what photos they want to purchase in a meeting. That meeting is usually called a “reveal session” where they see the photos for the first time.
Non-IPS
You could also sell all of the images in a collection with the sitting fee included for a single price. This is called “shoot and burn” or, more recently, “all-inclusive” pricing. Clients pay a single fee or price and receive a gallery of images in exchange. Some photographers only release those images for web or social media usage and sell the prints in the gallery, and some release them as personal print releases.

In a world that seems to polarize two extremes, I don’t see a decision between two philosophies, but instead I see a spectrum of opportunities. You can sell your art however you want to, and you can be creative with it.
If you’re not sure what direction you want to go, try basing your business model on what you personally believe in. You’ll succeed if you can sell what you believe and stand behind. Not sure where to start?
The idea of my own business began from being the customer. I had a terrible experience as a customer taking senior portraits with an IPS model. I had a wonderful experience as a customer as a bride where I paid once for all my images.
I took what I didn’t like from one experience, what I loved from another, and I built my entire business from the perspective of the client.
I also prioritize being on the other end of the lens at a minimum once a year so that I remember how it feels to be a customer.
