Building Client Relationships that Last

One of the sweetest parts of this job is the people I get to meet along the way. Over the years, some clients have even become close friends. Others are friendly faces I’ll always smile at when I see them across the warm-up arena or out and about!

I never go into a session expecting a lifelong friendship. But I do go in with the hope of building something meaningful, never forcing that relationship and instead letting it naturally take shape.

For me, keeping in touch doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to be intentional.

I keep a running Christmas card list and always include past clients. I collect their address during the booking process! After each session, I send a handwritten thank-you note. I know those small touches might seem old-fashioned, but I believe in them. I believe they matter.

Throughout the year, I try to stay loosely connected, cheering them on from the sidelines (sometimes literally)! If I see someone post about a new horse, a big win, or a new season of life, I try to take notice. I genuinely want to celebrate their joy with them! When someone lets you into that personal space, it’s a gift.

If I’m traveling to a horse show and I know a past client will be there, I’ll do my best to find them even if it’s just to say hello and catch up for a few minutes. These little efforts add up. They’re not about staying top-of-mind for business, they’re about staying connected as people.

That’s what builds trust. That’s what makes someone come back. Not because they feel obligated, but because they want to. Because they know I care about more than the photographs. I care about the person and horse(s) in the photo, too.

Return clients are never guaranteed. But the relationships I build with care, kindness, and consistency are one of the reasons I’ve been able to do this work for so many years.

And at the heart of it all? I just want to love on people the best I can. That’s what matters most to me.
