When I first started photographing clients, I wanted everything to feel easy and personal. I didn’t want to make it “too official.” I wanted to be kind. I wanted to be flexible. I wanted to trust people.
And I still do.
But I’ve learned over time that kindness and clarity can exist at the same time. In fact, they should. That’s where a contract comes in!
A contract is not about distrust. It’s about protection for both you and your client. It sets expectations clearly, in writing, so there are no questions later. It gives both parties something solid to stand on if confusion or conflict ever arise.
Because sometimes they do!
👉🏻 Sometimes a client asks for a refund because they don’t love the images, even though your time was spent, work was done, and everything agreed upon was delivered.
👉🏻 Sometimes a client misses a payment deadline and continues to delay without explanation.
👉🏻 Sometimes a client takes your edited images and applies their own filters before posting them.
👉🏻 Sometimes they give those same images to another company to use for marketing, without asking permission or paying the proper licensing fee.
And while these situations may be (hopefully) rare, they do happen. A contract helps protect your time, your business, and your intellectual property when they do.
It doesn’t have to be cold or complicated. A well-written contract is simply a clear outline of what’s included, what’s not, when payments are due, and how the images can (and can’t) be used. It answers the questions before they’re asked. It creates trust before problems arise.
And here’s the thing, it also makes you look more professional. It signals to your clients that this isn’t just a hobby, it’s a business. You are prepared, thoughtful, and honoring both your work and their investment.
I believe in running a business with grace, I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt. But I also believe in protecting what I’ve worked so hard to build.
So yes, I use contracts. Every time. And I encourage you to do the same!
